The Mythical Church, Vailankanni, Tamil Nadu India

The church is supported by three major myths. The first one being Virgin Mary appearing in front of a shepherd asking him to provide milk for Baby Jesus. After having performed this deed, he saw that his jug was always filled with milk. Therefore, a little thatched chapel had been built at that site.

The second miracle occurred towards the last part of the 16th century. When Virgin Mary appeared again, a lame boy recovered his limbs again. This resulted in the erection of a proper church.

And finally, the most widely believed myth is that, on the 8th of September, 1869, sailors of a ship in the Indian Ocean were fixed in a colossal storm. They promised Virgin Mary to build her a superlative church if they were rescued. After their ship was saved on the Velankanni shores, they built the Basilica and kept coming every year to embellish the church.
