Dantewada, India Overview
Dantewada is one of the most beautiful and picturesque districts of Chhattisgarh, located in the famous and enchanting Bastar region. Also one of the famous ancient towns of India, Dantewada had been the capital city of a glorious Kingdom in its golden past. It was known as Tarlapal and Dantawali in pre-historical days, mention of which can be found on the stone carvings found in the district.
Dantewada is blessed with exceptionally beautiful natural landscapes comprising of scenic hills and valleys, lush green sal and teak forests and young and lively rivers. Indravati, Godavari, Shabhari, Shankhini and Dankiny rivers flow all through the length and breathe of Dantewada. The major tourist attractions of Dantewada include the famous Danteshwari Temple, Bhairon Baba Temple, the historic sites of Barsoor and Bhadrakali, Bailadila Iron ore Project Township and hilltop habitations of Aakash Nagar and Kailash Nagar. The annual Dusshera Festival celebrated by all the major tribes of the region at the Danteshwari Temple attract thousands of visitors every year.
Dantewada's forests are home to several species of wildlife, including 2 that are native to the area - the Pahadi Maina and the Wild Buffalo. The area is inhabited by several tribal groups, including Maria, Muria, Dhurwa, Halba, Bhatra, and Gonds. They are renowned for their artistic excellence and produce outstanding terracotta, bell metal and bamboo-craft artisans.
Dantewada is extremely mineral rich. Bailadila has one of the largest deposits of Iron Ore in the world. Uranium, corundum, granite, graphite, limestone and marble are also found here.

Dantewada, India History
Before Indian Independence, the district was part of the princely state of Bastar. After Indian Independence in 1947, Bastar's ruler acceded to the government of India, and the erstwhile state became part of Bastar District of Madhya Pradesh state. Bastar District was divided into the districts of Bastar, Dantewada, and Kanker in 1999. In 2000, Dantewada was one of the 16 Madhya Pradesh districts that constituted the new state of Chhattisgarh. Dantewada was bifurcated in the year 2007 resulting into a new district Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh with 4 Tehsils namely Bijapur, Bhairamgarh, Usoor and Bhopalpatnam. It was further bifurcated in the year 2012 resulting into an other new district Sukma with 3 Tehsils namely Chhindgarh, Sukma and Konta.
