Wular Lake (also spelt Wullar), India's largest fresh water lake and one of the largest in Asia, is in Bandipora district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The lake basin was formed as a result of tectonic activity and is fed by the Jhelum River. The lake's size varies seasonally from 12 to 100 square miles (30 to 260 square kilometers). Boating, water sports and water ski have recently been launched by the Government of India Tourism in collaboration with Kerala Tourism and J&K Tourism. The contract for the operation of the site was awarded in September 2011.
It is also an important habitat for fish, accounting for 60 per cent of the total fish production within the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The lake is a source of livelihood for a large human population living along its fringes. The catchment area of the lake supports magnificent coniferous forests, alpine pastures and orchards, adding to the natural beauty and biodiversity of the wetland area.
It is India’s biggest freshwater lake and is the second biggest one in Asia. It has a unique flora and fauna and is home to a number of birds and fishes. Unfortunately, the lake’s future is under threat due to natural destructions. But the government and the tourism officials are taking all the proactive steps to make sure that it survives the test of time.
Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy water sports like water skiing and rafting on the Lake. The picturesque Wular Lake attracts a number of tourists every year. So enjoy water sports, try fishing, sail in the shikaras or simply relax and enjoy a little picnic on the lake side, a visit to Wular Lake will leave you enchanted.
