It was only after 1864 the town of Shillong was accorded the status of the new civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia hills.Boasting of a modest history, Shillong the capital of Meghalaya was a tiny village till 1864. During the colonial period, it was an integral part of the erstwhile British provincial state of Assam and served as the capital even after independence.
According to historical records Shillong was also the summer capital of Eastern Bengal for several years and the picturesque hill station suffered huge destruction during the 1897 destruction. It was only after Meghalaya attained Statehood, Shillong served as the capital of the new administration.
There is also a local legend surrounding the etymology of Shillong. It is believed that there was a handsome youth named 'Shyllong', who was born to a virgin human mother in Bisi, a village located near Shillong and this youth was none other than the Shillong deity.
