This temple was built during the reign of Chara Kings. At that time, the rulers had built two temples, Perumal Temple and Mariamman Temple. The Mariamman Temple is also famous as Kottai Periya Mari who was the guardian deity of Salem Fort. It is also the oldest surviving temple in Salem.
