Mettur Dam is situated in a village known as Mettur which is located at a distance of 30kms from Salem. This dam was built in 1934, and this is one of the largest and oldest dams in India.
This was constructed in a ravine, where River Kaveri enters the plains. The dam is built at a height of 65metre,at a length of 1700 meters in an area of 15,540 hectare and with a capacity of 2648 cubic meters. Mettur Dam provides irrigation facilities to part of Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Thiruchirappali and Thanjavur district.
The dam forms Stanley Reservoir and there is a Hydro-Electrical Power station which produces 240MW. There is a beautifully garden, a park, a temple near the river and the hills surrounding the region makes this place a tourist spot for the visitors. There are several manufacturing factories in this region, which can be visited by the tourist after getting proper permission from them.
The Hydro-electric power station can also be visited after obtaining permission from the authorities. There is a Place called Pannavadi near mettur, where there is a temple and a Nandi statue which will be visible when the water level is low in the dam. This was built around more than 200years back.
There is also an old Church located near pannavadi, which is covered by the river and the church will be visible when the water level is down. Pannavadi is located 8kms from the Dam.
