Guntur, India Overview
Guntur is a city and a municipal corporation in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, located 40 miles (64 km) to the north and west of the Bay of Bengal. It is approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) to the south of the national capital, New Delhi and 266 kilometres (165 mi) south east of state capital, Hyderabad. The city has a population of 6,54,381 (as per 2011 census). During the year 2012 the city limits have been expanded by merging ten surrounding villages into the corporation and the population of the city has increased to more than 10 lakhs with an urban agglomeration around 1.5 million. It is the fourth largest city in the state by the size of population and the third largest city by the area (sq. miles).
Guntur is a centre of learning and the administrative capital of Guntur district, which is home of historically significant Amaravati, Undavalli caves, Kondavid Fort and Sitanagaram monuments. The city is also a centre for business/commerce, industry, and agriculture. The region is identified as a major transportation and textile hub in India. Additionally, the Guntur area economy has an agricultural component that is internationally known for its exports of chillies, cotton, and tobacco.
Guntur situated 64 km away from the Bay of Bengal lies in Andhra Pradesh and is the fourth largest city of the state. The city has something of everything. It is one of the learning centres of the state; it holds historical significance; it is a textile and transportation hub of the country and it also holds agricultural importance because of the production of cotton and tobacco.

Guntur, India History
The history of Guntur dates back to the 10th century CE. It finds mention in an inscription of the Chalukyan King, Ammaraja. The city is believed to have been ruled by the Chalukyas for a majority of the time, although there is evidence to suggest that the Nagals also ruled this city over a period of time.
Guntur also has an ancient temple by the name of Agasthyaeswara Sivalayam, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple dates back to the 12th century, has some ancient inscriptions and is believed to have been built by Agastya.
The modern history of the place comprises of British and European rule. The French arrived here in 1752 and formed the centre of the modern town of Guntur. They were later followed by the British who built many important structures in the city and carried out expansion activities.
