Rawang, Malaysia Overview
Rawang is a town in the district of Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia. It was the capital of Gombak until 1997.
Rawang is currently experiencing steep development. Many new shops and houses are being constructed. In 2006, a new central market was opened to meet the increasing demand from the population. Some of the major self-contained townships in Rawang include Bandar Tasik Puteri, Bandar Country Homes, Kota Emerald, Rawang Perdana and Saujana Rawang. There are number of shopping centers in Rawang which includes Tesco, Parkson, Giant and the upcoming AEON Jusco which opened in Feb 2012.The forest reserve at Templers Park leading towards Rawang is being cleared to make way for more housing development without any regards for the environment.
The town is riddled with illegal loan shark notices all over the town and even on traffic signboards like none other. Enforcement has been lax if any. The foreign workers outnumber locals in the town centre. The parking in the main street is haphazard and it is double parked most of the time bringing a double lane traffic to a crawl. The town planners and the authorities have not put any traffic strategy in place and blame it on education and attitude without any action being taken. The crime rate has been escalating over the years given the large number migrants from other states and countries. The local mafia Geng08 has also been boldly defacing and spray painting public signboards "promoting" their grim presence in Rawang
