The Shechen Monastery is one of the six primary, or "mother," monasteries of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, in Tibet. It is located in Derge between Nangdo and Dzogchen Monastery.
Shechen Monastery in Tibet was founded in 1695 by the 1st Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche, Tenpé Gyaltsen, and which is one of the Six Pillar Monasteries of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. Shechen Monastery is renowned for the authenticity of the teachings at its shedra and for the quality of its sacred arts. Many great masters have come forth from Shechen Monastery. These include Mipham Rinpoche, Shechen Gyaltsab, Shechen Kongtrul, Shechen Ontrul and Khenpo Gangshar. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and Chögyam Trungpa just to name a few. In addition, many more important 20th century teachers have received teachings at this monastery.
Shechen Monastery in Nepal was founded in 1980 by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche to preserve the Tibetan Buddhist heritage. It has 450 monks who are completely supported by the Monastery. There is also a smaller Shechen Monastery in Bodhgaya, India and Shechen Orgyen Chozong Nunnery in Bhutan which offers rare opportunity to one hundred nuns to study and train in the Khyentse lineage.
