The Kushavarta Ghat was commissioned by Ahilyabai, the Holkar dynasty warrior queen and a great benefactor who has left behind a number of temples and other religious places.

The Ghat is used primarily for rituals seeking salvation for the departed.

According to a legend, Dattatreya a celebrated deity who is believed to have been created by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva is said to have meditated near here for many centuries standing on just one foot.
