Nuwakot is a small hilltop village with around 2,000 inhabitants, mainly Newars. The village is situated around 76 km northwest of Kathmandu on a hill known Chundi-besi. This hill is a narrow spit of land which separates the Trisuli and the Tadi Rivers. The Trisuli River begins to the north near the Langtang range of the Himalayan Mountains and bear importance to the Kathmandu Valley since the river is the valley's main trade route with Tibet. Nuwakot's privileged position has played an important role throughout the history of Nepal. From Nuwakot, the Gorkha King Prithvinarayan Shah planned and launched several unification campaigns, finally conquering the Kathmandu Valley and unifying Nepal in 1769 A.D. Needless to say, Nuwakot has an important cultural and historical heritage, including palaces and temples such as the magnificent 7-storey high Sattale Durbar.
trip to Nuwakot along the mountain highway, Trisuli Road, is rewarding with views of green forests on one side and terraced cultivation on the other. The road to Nuwakot begins from Kathmandu and terminates at Bidur where the road to Nuwakot bifurcates. The vehicles can go right up to the top of Nuwakot. It takes about two hours to reach Nuwakot by car from Kathmandu. There are frequent bus and other vehicle services from Thamel to Nuwakot.
