Mahendra Gupha is an impressive limestone cave. Marvelous stalagmites and stalactites formations in the cave are enough to give popularity to Mahendra Gupha. As Pokhara is well known with hiking enthusiasts, Mahendra gupha is also an exciting place to explore having rock formations and caves here. Mahendra Gupha is locally known as Chamero Odhaar which means House of Bats. Mahendra Caves were discovered by a couple of shepherd boys in 1950 and Its name is derived from the former ruler of Nepal, King Mahendra Bir Bikram. But Mahendra caves has vandalized by the visitors as they break off the beautiful formations to keep as a momento. The depth of these caves is still a mystery. The lightng system is also provided there to see all the rock formations but still it is recommended to take a flashlight to enjoy a better experience of glittering rock types and it also can be used when electricity goes off. The shining rocks reflects and make it easier to see the ultimate beauty of the caves. As its name suggests, one can see the hanging bats from the ceiling of the cave. Visting Mahendra Gupha is a unique opportunity to explore an ancient cave system. This majestic tourist destination attracts lots of local and international tourists and quite popular among hikers.
It takes two hours to reach Mahendra cave from Pokhara. It is actually a limestone cave that is home to thousands of bats therefore it is also known as “House of Bats”. This cave is favorite attraction of tourists as it is full of stalactite and stalagmite formations. Visitors are overwhelmed with a great feeling when they see these formations along with a number of terrific looking bats. It is not only a natural attraction but also a religious site because its walls have images of Hindu gods and goddesses and people believe that these images have been appeared naturally. For tourists’ convenience, the cave has been fitted with a lighting system. Mahendra Cave is also popular for its stones which shine when a beam of light hits them.
This is a large limestone cave at a two hour walk to the north of Pokhara. Locally known as the House of Bats, it is famous for its stalactites and stalagmites.
