Durga Temple is located near the remnants of the Summer Palace. The Jaintia king is believed to have constructed this temple, when he converted to Hinduism. Earlier, the temple was a Khasi complex, which had a central wooden pillar with thatch roof. Later, the thatch roof was replaced by the corrugated tin roof. During the Jaintia rule, the main deity of the temple, was offered human sacrifices. A tunnel present within the temple was used to throw human heads into the Myntang River. Later, the British banned human sacrifices, during their rule.
