Chaubatia Orchard is located a mere 10 km away from the city of Ranikhet at an altitude of 1800 mts above sea level. This garden is known for its extensive orchards of delicious peaches, plums, apricots and apples.
Chaubatia, as the name suggests is the junction of four ('chau') paths ('batia'), inter-linking the cities of Ranikhet, Bhargaon, Pilkholi and Dehrti.It is said that Chaubatia so captivated the heart of Lord Mayo, the then British Viceroy of India, during his stay in 1868 that he ordered the establishment of the cantonment for the British cavalry. Thus came into existence, the cantonment of Chaubatia. Chaubatia is also famous for its fruit gardens run by the Government Fruit Research Centre. Amongst these are apple orchards and a botanical garden.
Chaubatia with its serene environment and natural beauty is an excellent place for a picnic with the family. The step farming used for growing fruits is a sight to behold. Also being set at over 1800 mts above sea level this place becomes a vantage point for viewing the surrounding mountain ranges. One can clearly see distant snow capped Himalayan Mountains and the heights of the Nilkanth, Trishul, Nanda Devi and Nandaghunti. You can also go for a walk in the forests. The place covers an area of around 600 acres and is filled with flora of different species. The vegetation here mainly consists of silver oak, rhododendron, cypress, cedar and pine trees. At the end of the orchard there is a small restaurant where you can enjoy a cup of tea while enjoying the majestic view in front of you.
Another reason to visit this place is that you can get quality fruits at government regulated prices which won’t burn a hole in your pocket. Along with fruits you can also buy the best squashes juices and honey at the place. Nearby places to visit are the Bhalu dam and the Jhoola Devi temple which is a shrine to a goddess on a swing.
Chaubatia is a famous tourist attraction located at a distance of 10 km from Ranikhet. This place has lush green orchards with 200 various types of fruits and flowers. These orchards produce delicious apples, peaches, plums, and apricots. Surrounded by silver oak, rhododendron, cypress, cedar, and pine forests, this place offers panoramic views. The Government Apple Garden and The Fruit Research Centre are located nearby. This place is also a renowned picnic spot. Besides, this site offers the breathtaking views of the snowy Himalayan Ranges including the peaks of Nanda Devi, Nilkanth, Nandaghunti, and Trishul.
Chaubatia is a vantage point set amidst gardens. The Government Fruit Research center is located here. On a clear morning a 300 km wide view of the snow - clad Himalayan peaks can be seen clearly from Chaubatia, 10 Km from Ranikhet on a motorable road. The Nanda Devi, Trisul, Nanda Ghunti and Nilkanth peaks are very clear. Bhaludam, 3 Km from here, has an artificial lake. Chaubatia is full of gardens with attached fruit research centre providing choicest varieties of apples during the season.
