Kangaroo Island, Australia Overview
Kangaroo Island is 155 km long by 55km wide with 540 kms coastline covering some 4,500 sq kms. It is Australia’s third largest island after Tasmania and Melville Islands.
Kangaroo Island or KI as the locals call it is a South Australia icon and one of world’s finest nature destinations, with breathtaking landscapes and fascinating wildlife. Just a short distance off the coast of South Australia, Kangaroo Island is internationally celebrated for its pristine wilderness and wildlife as well as a thriving food and wine industry.
Across the island a menagerie of wildlife abounds – from kangaroos and wallabies to echidna and goannas, koalas eye you from the gum trees. Take a visit to Seal Bay, home to a colony of Australian sea lions or take a nocturnal tour to see the little penguins parading the beach.
Enjoy some South Australian award-winning wines at local wineries or relish in the vast array of local produce on offer. From sheep’s cheese and yoghurt to organic honey from the island’s famous Ligurian bee, explore a selection of local seafood from delicate fresh water crayfish called Marron, the famous King George whiting or oysters.
The recreation on the island is as exciting and diverse as its wildlife and produce, and you don’t have to travel far before you find another fabulous experience! There’s boating, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, surfing, caving, bushwalking, quad-biking and sandboarding to name just a few!
