Ayutthaya, Thailand Overview
Ayutthaya is named after the city of Ayodhya in India, the birthplace of Rama in the Ramayana Phra is a Thai royal and noble title; Nakhon designates an important or capital city; Thai honorific Sri or Si is from the Indian term of veneration Sri. Ayutthaya is situated in Thailand, 85kms from Bangkok.
It is accessible via car, train or bus, and once you are here it is possible to get around by taxi or mini bus.The region is renowned for its magnificent ruins and it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site.The ancient ruins are evidence that this area was a prosperous city during the 17th century and there are many sites of interest.There are three palaces including the Grand Palace and the Wang Lang Palace.There are temples that are in ruins as well as functioning temples which require the appropriate dress code to visit.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet is the largest temple, and it is built on the property of a former royal palace.Museums in the city offer more information about the city's history and the Ayutthaya Historical Study Center is worth a visit.This is a good place to start exploring the city as it puts the historical sites into perspective. Other options are Baan Hollanda or the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum.Ayutthaya City Center hotels offer a peaceful night's sleep after a busy day of sightseeing.
