Jantar Mantar is a famous observatory of astronomy which was constructed by the Raja of Jaipur - Sawai Jai Singh II. Located near Connaught Place in Delhi Jantar Mantar houses such astronomical instruments as Jai Prakash yantra, Misra yantra, Ram yantra and Samrat yantra.
Among many historical Delhi monuments Jantar Mantar is quite unique as it is one of the five exclusive astronomic observatories constructed by Raja Jai Singh. Being an enthusiast of astronomy Raja Sawai Jai Singh II took the initiative to build an advanced observatory which in later years assisted the study of celestial bodies.
While the Jai Prakash yantra of Jantar Mantar was used to locate the positioning of celestial bodies and the sun, Misra yantra represented four different types of advanced scientific appliances. Ram yantra of Jantar Mantar was used for comprehending the various altitudes and angles, whereas the Samrat yantra was an equal hour sun dial made under the guidance of Raja Jai Singh.
Today, when science and technology has gained new heights of advancement, Jantar Mantar is considered as one of the pioneering symbols of the scientific progress of astronomy in India. Apart from tourists, astronomers and other interested people from various scientific fields visit Jantar Mantar frequently to explore the innovative dynamism of Raja Sawai Jai Singh in the domain of astronomy.
