St Michael's Church is a Grade 1 listed building dating from the 12th C. The church is built mainly from stones from Hadrian's Wall and the Roman fort on which it is situated. It's history spans 8 decades.
Edward I died on Burgh marsh in 1307 and his body lay in state for 10 days in Burgh Church, during which time it was visited by his heir Edward II and the court of the day.
The 14th C Pele Tower (one of only 3 attached to churches still standing in Cumbria) provided a place of refuge for the villagers and their animals during the following centuries of lawlessness and the rule of the Border Reivers. The original heavy gate (yeat) and the twin bells used to alert the villagers in those days are still in use today.
Many original features can be viewed including a carved Celtic head and Saxon carved stones. Victorian stained glass windows depict Edward I and 4 of the Celtic saints, Cuthbert, Ninian, Aidan and Kentigern.
