Dattatreya Temple is the main attraction of the Dattatreya Square. It is the giant three-storied temple is believed to have been built with the stem of a single tree.
Dattatreya Temple in Bhaktapur is the only temple in Nepal dedicated to Lord Dattatreya. This ancient temple was built in 1427 by King Yaksha Malla at the erstwhile capital of Nepal Mandal. The main attraction of Dattatreya Temple in Bhaktapur is that this three-story pagoda-style temple was constructed from a single piece of wood from one tree. Lord Dattatreya is a combined incarnation of three supreme Gods in Hinduism –Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
The seat of royalty until the 15th century or so, the area is home to a great number of historic monuments including maths temples and a museum. Constructed by King Yaksha Malla in 1428, the three storey Dattatreya Temple is the main attraction of this square. Dedicated to the Dattatreya, a blending of the Hindu deities Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, the temple is the oldest shrine in Bhaktapur.
