Tiger and Lion Safari is one of the major attraction of Shimoga taluk which is at Sagara road. Tiger and Lion safari is a small zoo constructed in about 300 hectors of dense forest land. Lion safari has many species of animals including Tiger, Lion, Cheetah, bears, deer, snakes, crocodiles, emus, Peacocks etc which are the major attraction. Huge crowd visits the places daily and every Tuesday is holiday. Lion safari has many things to offer including free watch of animals like bears, snakes, peacocks and also there is a safari conducted in safe van which take tourists into the forest where lions, deers and many other animals are seen. There is also a museum which has information about forest trees and animals. Play area for kids was recently renovated and cafeteria serves hot beverages, cold drinks and snacks. there are few watch towers where one can take look at Lion safari from eagle's view.
At a distance of 10 km from Shimoga, en-route to Sagar town, Lions, Tigers and other animals are often found roaming around in the deep forests freely. The Lion-Tiger Safari started way back in 1988 is an ideal picnic spot. The safari is spread over a huge area of 200 hectares of dense forest. One can be a witness to the grace, diversity, colour and marvel of nature and catch enlivening glimpses of lions, tigers, cheetah, bear, deer, and rare migratory birds as they amble around in this luxuriant habitat.Regular recreation and sight seeing outings are organized by the forest department for visitors and special recreation facilities are made for the children visiting the Safari. While the scene is sure to enrapture you, there are strict rules prohibiting the use of Cameras within the area and while on the Safari.Almost all buses to Sagar will stop here and Sagar is also the nearest railhead, while the closest airport is at Mangalore. The Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary, the Sakrebayalu Elephant Camp, the Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary and Gudavi Bird Sanctuary are the other nearby tourist attractions.
