Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Dam Dim, West Bengal India

The Jorasanko Thakur Bari in Jorasanko, north of Kolkata, West Bengal, India is the ancestral home of the Tagore family. It is currently located on the Rabindra Bharati University campus at 6/4 Dwarakanath Tagore Lane Jorasanko, Kolkata 700007. It is the house in which the poet and first non-European Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore was born. It is also the place where he spent most of his childhood and died on 7 August 1941.

The City of Joy can never be imagined without the name of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore whose charm still fragments the city. Thus Kolkata is an indispensable part of Tagore and his home Jorasanko Thakurbari, Kolkata is still being worshipped by everybody.

The famous Jorasanko Thakurbari, Kolkata was constructed in the 18th century by Dwarakanath Tagore, the grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore. This is the place where Rabindranath was born, spent his glorious life and passed away. Now Jorasanko Thakurbari has mostly been converted into a museum with the grand collection of Tagore’s creation. The Rabindra Bharati University is also situated in this Heritage Building’s arena. The Rabindra Bharati Museum is a splendid one and a worth watching place of Kolkata also. Jorasanko Thakurbari’s Rabindra Bharati Museum was established in the year 1961.

Jorashanko takes its name from the original Jora Shankar, from the twin Shankar (Shiva) temples nearby. The arena comprises several buildings. The Rabindra Bharati Museum housed within the University and certainly is a major repository of the works of the Tagores, especially of Abanindranath and Rabindranath.

Rabindra Bharati Museum has a rich collection of books, original paintings, mauscripts, photographs and other items related to the leading personalities of the 19th century such as Iswar Chanda Vidyasagar and Dwarkanath Tagore. Nicely printed sets of cards are available here.Paintings of Tagores, Bengal School, Anglo Indian Schools, manuscripts of Rabindranath Tagore and the family, distinguished persons of the 19th century; photographs, personal effects, books and journals, tapes, disc, records, etc.

Rabindra Bharati Museum celebrates the function on the twenty fifth day of the Bengali month of Baishakh (8th or 9th May) the birthday and the date of poet’s demise respectively. It also celebrates the birth anniversaries of world famous poets such as Maharshi Devendranath Tagore, Jyotirindranath, Abanindranath and Dinendranath.
